An appeal has been made to the Archbishop of Canterbury for Canon Andrew White to be defrocked, (i.e. removed from the Anglican ministry) on account of his advocacy on BBC Radio 4 of the death penalty to be implemented against Saddam Hussein,

William Spring, who is an Anglican layman from a pentecostal background, and at one stage associated with the Episcopal Church of the Middle East, described Canon Andrew White's broadcast on last week's (5/11/06) BBC Radio 4 Sunday programme as disgraceful.

"For an Anglican priest to be advocating the murder of the President of Iraq is astounding."

The letter to the Anglican Archbishop is pasted below + extracts from an e mail to the Producer of the Sunday programme and the text of the earlier letter to the two Archbishops.

To the Most Rev Rowan Williams

I wrote to you October 18th outlining my idea for a Day of Prayer and National Repentance for our attack on Iraq which according to a study recently published in The Lancet has resulted in approximately 655,000 deaths from the Iraqi population.

In other correspondence I mentioned the role of Canon Andrew White.

This last Sunday I heard the end part of a further interview Canon Andrew White gave on the Sunday programme in which he called for the murder of the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein.

I call him the President, (howbeit deposed by military invasion) because the existing so called Government in Baghdad is not legitimate having been created as a result of this same military invasion,

As I say in my original letter of October 16th the claim that the current regime in Baghdad was elected democratically is a nonsense as while these so called elections were proceeding thousands of men and women of all ages remained incarcerated without trial and were therefore unable to participate in the elections, either candidates or canvassers.

Many of these detainees were simultaneously being tortured or beaten to death during this period.

Canon Andrew White seems to regard the so called trial as perfectly proper.

But seven of Saddam Hussein's defence team were murdered during the trial, including his chief defence attorney, and the public and media were not given access to the Court.

Even tonight (7/11/06) on BBC 24 Hours television John Simpson was unable to talk to Saddam's legal representative except on the telephone as he is being held by the Americans.

Malcolm Muggeridge said to me once "anything is permissible except bringing the law into disrepute" and this is what has happened not only in the Saddam Hussein trial but in the Milosevic trial as well.

You will recall the President of Yugoslavia was also given an offer he couldn't refuse.

He did refuse it and consequently was murdered by the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia who connived at him being given poison in his cell.

This is Victor's justice.

I conclude that Canon Andrew White is a thoroughly repulsive hypocrite, entirely devoid of any comprehension of the Christian gospel who has no concern about the effect of his remarks, in terms of the Christian image throughout the Middle East.

He wants to identify the Church with western military adventurism.

My view is that he should be defrocked, made to leave the Anglican Ministry as soon as possible.

He has brought that Ministry into disrepute by his bloodthirsty remarks.

Yours sincerely

William Spring
